Global Microfinance Initiative - Partnerships

Samantha McCraine @World Bank Group • 5 May 2026

Partnerships are central to the Global Microfinance Initiative. Making green finance viable requires collaboration and coordination across policy regulators, technical experts, local actors, and financial institutions.

The Initiative brings these partners together at the local, regional, and national levels. Working with microfinance institutions, governments, and technical experts, it supports the design of financial products that respond to local demand—and helps build the national standards and systems that allow those products to reach clients at scale. This coordinated approach sustains bottom-up efforts to advance financial inclusion, while helping to mobilize new sources of funding for microfinance, ensuring each dollar invested achieves maximum impact.

To implement this program at scale, the World Bank Group partners with:

The Global Environment Facility (GEF) provides $10 million in dedicated financing to support the Global Microfinance Initiative’s ongoing activities, while also embedding the initiative within its network of global programs to facilitate cross-context learning.

Drawing on its deep research base and expertise on inclusive finance, CGAP helps financial institutions design environmentally sensitive products and mitigate risks from lending to climate-exposed clients.
