As climate change impacts intensify across Europe and Central Asia, affecting ecosystems, livelihoods, public infrastructure, and essential services, empowering local actors to adapt and respond effectively is critical. Rural communities, often the most affected by climate shocks, play a central role in identifying and implementing climate-smart solutions that reflect their priorities.
This event, "Locally Led Responses Bridging Climate, Livelihoods and Resilience," hosted by the Vienna Development Knowledge Center, brought together practitioners, experts, and policymakers to exchange concrete experiences and lessons learned. The event featured a range of cases from around the region to show how community-driven approaches are influencing climate resilience through initiatives in agriculture, environmental protection, data systems, capacity building for youth, energy systems, water security, and local governance.

Field visits led by Geosphere Austria, Zukunftsallianz, and Klimabündnis (“Alliance for Climate”) offered a closer look at innovative climate solutions in practice. A tour of the Sonnenfeld agri-photovoltaic facility and the biogas plant in Bruck an der Leitha in Lower Austria gave participants a close look at how renewable energy production can be integrated with sustainable agriculture and waste management. A visit to the City of Baden further illustrated Austria’s “climate model region” approach and showcased how municipality-run participatory climate councils can generate actionable ideas that lead to tangible implementation.
