Unlocking Finance for Local Jobs and Resilient Livelihoods: The Global Microfinance Initiative

The Global Microfinance Initiative for Locally Led Action is a Global Environment Facility-funded and World Bank-implemented program designed to facilitate improved access to finance for climate and biodiversity by local actors. Over the next three years, the Global Microfinance Initiative will explore the potential of microfinance to improve local job and livelihood resilience, while also catalyzing innovation and expanding economic opportunities across sectors like agriculture, energy, forestry, infrastructure, textiles, and tourism.

Activities supported by this initiative across seven countries – Brazil, Colombia, Madagascar, Nigeria, South Africa, Tanzania, and Türkiye – will generate timely insights on how to build systems that enable financial inclusion, support local formal and informal financial institutions, and scale the transformative partnerships needed for durable, green economic growth and lasting livelihood resilience.

How Can Locally Led Climate Action Support Just Coal Transitions?

Transitioning away from coal towards affordable, reliable, and clean energy sources is urgent and essential for fulfilling the goals of the Paris Agreement. Yet this process, if not designed with inclusion and justice in mind, can have unintended, negative consequences for marginalized groups and communities whose livelihoods and identities have long been shaped by the sector. LLCA approaches can offer valuable insights for supporting socially sustainable, just coal transitions. In this webinar, we will discuss what actions can be undertaken at the earliest stages of preparing for a just transition, to ensure that transition decision-making is inclusive and benefits are shared across society. We will hear country examples on meaningful community engagement and participation, as well as trust and coalition-building to support effective bottom-up planning and action.
