Mozambique, home to 33.9 million people, remains one of the world’s least developed countries and continues to face persistent development challenges. Although the economy grew at an average annual rate of over 7% between 2000 and 2015, progress has been repeatedly set back by a series of shocks, including the hidden debt crisis, recurrent cyclones, the COVID-19 pandemic, and ongoing conflict in the north. The economy remains heavily reliant on natural resources, particularly extractive industries, while the agriculture sector — employing over 72% of the population — suffers from low productivity and high vulnerability to climate-related shocks. As a result, an estimated 74.5% of the population lives in poverty, with rural areas most severely affected.
