As a landlocked country in southern Africa, Zambia faces significant development challenges stemming from its vulnerability to climate change. Rising temperatures, declining rainfall, and increasingly frequent extreme weather events—such as floods and droughts—have severely impacted Zambia’s climate sensitive sectors, particularly agriculture and natural resources. In the Barotse Sub-basin climate-related hazards have deepened long-standing poverty and vulnerability. With a poverty rate of 64.3%, among the highest in the country, communities in the region are geographically isolated, face limited economic opportunities, and suffer from chronic food insecurity.
